How to Create Office Space in OKC Apartments

In OKC apartments, you might not have the luxury of having a separate room as an office. Limited space is already heightened when there are multiple residents. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t carve out an area for a desk.
A little creativity (and a lot of elbow grease) goes a long way. Whether you’re trying to squeeze in a drafting table or creating a full-blown study, here are some tips for creating a stylish office space in OKC apartments.
Mapping Your Canvas
First, there are three steps to creating a home office space in OKC apartments:
Step 1: Open up some square footage.
Step 2: Identify an unused area of your home.
Step 3: Shop for a small desk (multi-purpose, if possible).

Sometimes, rearranging the furniture in a living room or bedroom can give you the square footage you need for an office. To create an open flow, try placing your sofa or other large furniture along the longest wall. Then, arrange your desk directly in front of the window. This creates a larger center space, preventing any feelings of crowdedness.

Filling Your Space
Next is the second part of the design process. Evaluate your space, assessing its pros and cons. Then, identify the proper size and type of desk you’ll be using. This is where that creative thinking comes into play. Look for unassuming areas of your home that aren’t being utilized. Then, choose one of these desk options to construct a stylish (yet practical) office setup.

6 Areas to Find the Best Apartments in OKC Metro

OKC Metro is one of the fastest growing areas in the state, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

There isn’t a shortage of apartment options in the Oklahoma City Metro. It’s a bustling area with plenty to do, and if you find yourself in the area for college, work or just a new place to live, here are the best apartments in OKC.

Quail Springs

Quail Springs is near almost any activity you could want to do in OKC including indoor skydiving, a movie theater, driving range, bowling, shopping and more.
You can also find dozens of restaurants to accommodate any craving. If eating in is your preferred option, grocery options will keep your pantry stocked and fridge full.  Quail Springs is growing fast, with families and new businesses moving in every day.

We have two apartment complexes just off May and Pennsylvania Avenues that keep you close to the fun. With easy access to highway 74, a drive to the city is just minutes away. The turnpike keeps traffic moving so you can get where you need to be with less hassle.
Come visit Quail Run and Quail Ridge apartments. You will be surprised at the space offered, and the stunning recent renovations we’ve made.

Lake Hefner

Maybe the hustle and bustle of life on the town isn't exactly your forte.  You get enough of it when you go to work, so you just want to come home and relax.  If you do want to go out, it's on your terms.

It can be nice to have the freedom to breathe easy outside and not feel the pressures of the town around you. That's why we have options near Lake Hefner.

Come and jog around the many parks that line the lake.  Dining and shopping options are a short drive away, but you may want to stay in and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Stonebrook is the place to live for the quieter lifestyle in a busy town. It’s situated in a neighborhood across from the lake, offering serenity every time you come home. With several floor plan options, we think you’ll love the location.

2nd Street Near University of Central Oklahoma

On the northern end of Oklahoma City is the wonderful town of Edmond.  It’s a short drive to Midtown, and it has easy access to major highways.

It has small town flair and big town names. Restaurants and shopping centers offer you a robust list of entertainment options.

With some of the best schools in the state, Edmond has a lot going for it. It’s a perfect area to raise a family or attend college at UCO.

We have options for you in the center of it all just off 2nd Street, which is the main road through Edmond. It’s far enough away from the highway, but close enough that gets you to anywhere you want to go in a flash.

Take a tour of Kickingbird and Kickingbird Hills, and you’ll find spacious floor plans and affordable rent that fit any budget.

Belle Isle

Don't be near the action, be a part of it. There are plenty of options that get you close to the city, and that’s fine for some people. But the best part of living in a city is the culture and the feel of the people that inhabit it. Seeing it from afar just doesn't quite cut it.

La Villa is the perfect center point for everything to do in Oklahoma City.  It is a few minutes away from downtown OKC, and a short drive to Lake Hefner for a relaxing evening.  With floor plan options ranging from 1 bed, 1 bath to 3 bed, 2 baths, you have plenty of space to grow and explore.

 University of Oklahoma College Town

If we say, “Boomer,” you say “Sooner”!  Norman is a true college town with a lot of pride. It’s only about a 30-minute commute to OKC, so while it’s out of the city limits, you can still enjoy being close to town.

Norman has an adorable downtown with delicious dining experiences and some of the best shops around. If you are coming to school, there is no other place to move. You will want to stay nearby.

The Landing on 9 offers easy access to the University of Oklahoma from the south with direct access to Highway 9. Alameda Pointe puts you near the heart of downtown Norman within walking distance of restaurants and shops.

West Norman

West of I-35, Norman gets a little quieter.  Don't let that fool you though, there is still plenty to do.  With Sooner Mall right around the corner, Parkway Plaza Shopping Center, and almost any dining experience you can hope for, you won’t run out of places to visit on your day off.
Situated on Main Street, you get direct access to the interstate which pipes directly into Oklahoma City.  There are few better places to be in Norman.
Savannah Ridge offers up to 2 bed and 2 baths on the west side of Norman.  Savannah Square and Savannah Harbor are right across the street from Sooner Mall and offer up to 3-bedroom floor plans.
We hope this helps you make a decision for your next big move. If you’re visiting the metro to visit your potential new home, we’d love to answer any of your questions and help you find a place to stay. Call us at any of our OKC Metro locations, and we’ll be happy to schedule a private tour!

Small Apartment Communities in OKC, Huge Benefits for Residents

Small Apartment Communities in OKC, Huge Benefits for Residents

Oklahoma City has a lot to offer its residents from the low cost of living to fun annual events. If you’re moving to a small apartment community, you won’t have a shortage of things to love about the city.

OKC is undergoing a steady revitalization including new river attractions, delicious eateries in Bricktown and Midtown’s transformation into one of Oklahoma’s premiere nightlife districts. There is something to discover for everyone.

Here are just a few of the great things you’ll enjoy by moving to OKC.

1. The Dollar Goes a Long Way in OKC.

The cost of living in Oklahoma City is lower than many of the large US cities, which means there is more you can do with your dollar other than pay for rent.  It might mean beefing up your savings account, or enjoying a few of the many entertainment options the city offers.  Not to mention, your enjoyable night on the town can be fun even with a small budget.

2. It’s One of the Top Seven Places to Raise a Family.

With many education options available for your children, Oklahoma City is one of the top cities in the US for new families.  If you are a parent with a career, never fear because Oklahoma city is one of the top ten least expensive cities for child care.

Oklahoma City also has some of the highest high school graduation rates among top cities in the US.  The time and effort moving here are well worth it for your kids.  Once they graduate, there are plenty of options for higher education as well in and around the city.

There are also plenty of family-fun activities including the Oklahoma City Zoo, Botanical Garden, and Children’s Theater.

 3. College Students Thrive in OKC

OKC is in the top ten cities in the US for college graduation rates. The schools have a variety of degree options and specialties from law to engineering.

An excellent education and a booming economy mean many recent grads are keeping their roots here. Oklahoma City is also one of the top cities in the US for arts and entertainment, and we have some of the best bars and restaurants in the US. A college student not only has access to a fantastic education but plenty of after-class activities.

 4. You Can Enjoy All Four Seasons During the Year.

Sure, Oklahoma does have a reputation for some wild weather, but for most of the year, you’ll enjoy a reasonably mild climate. Most importantly, you’ll get to experience all four seasons from chilly winter mornings to hot summer afternoons by the saltwater pool at La Villa.

This great weather helps put Oklahoma City in the top ten cities for city parks.  Enjoy the Myriad Botanical Gardens and their year-round events.

If you have a dog, Oklahoma City welcomes you.  Enjoy the outdoors with your furry friend at one of the many dog parks.  OKC’s Paw Park is regarded as one of the best in the nation

5.  It’s on WalletHub’s 2017 List of Happiest Places to Live.

It’s hard not to smile in such a great town. With a low cost of living, low unemployment rates and fun activities, it opens up the possibilities for families to thrive.

There is so much to do and see in and around Oklahoma City.  Traveling out of the city is a breeze since it is the center of almost everything.  It is just a few hours of driving for you to the next big city if you need a weekend away.

 6.  Oklahoma City Made the Top 20 Places in the US for Jobs.

That’s right; we beat out Seattle, Atlanta, and Washington DC, which means you will be in a prime location for building your career.  Searching for jobs is a breeze.

In addition to a low cost of living, you can enjoy a booming economy with plenty of employment opportunities.  Oklahoma City has one of the lowest rates of unemployment among top US cities beating out several Texas cities such as Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.

11 ideas to decorate your apartment living space for the holidays

11 ideas to decorate your apartment living space for the holidays

The last two months of the year are full of cheer, hot beverages, warm fires, lots of family time and fun decorations. What’s not to love?

It’s fun to get creative when decorating for the holidays, but with limited space, things can get tricky. Luckily there are many ways to showcase your style while keeping things simple, small and stress-free.

1.  Say no to wall damage

Regardless if it is Thanksgiving, Christmas or any other holiday, It doesn’t make sense to cause damage by using nails and screws for a temporary occasion. You also might have lease terms prohibiting the use of fasteners because it will put holes in the walls.

Instead, use adhesive hooks because they can be used again when the holidays are over. These can be found in most department stores and come in a variety of designs for different uses. Another practical option is Washi tape, and it comes in a variety of decorative prints.

2. Pinecones are nature’s gift during the holidays

Grab a basket and visit a neighborhood park to pick up some pinecones. Paint them green and apply a star to the top to make miniature Christmas trees. You can also attach string or ribbon to use them as ornaments. Pinecones are great for both Thanksgiving or Christmas if you decorate them to fit the season. Since they are free, grab a few, paint them to match your theme and then just throw them away.

3. Choose bright colors

Think outside of the box when picking colors for your holiday displays. Fun colors such as orange, pink, blue, and yellow will brighten places with inadequate lighting such as apartments with small windows.  In small spaces, sometimes it helps to ask yourself, “what other purposes will this serve,” before you buy a new decoration. If it doesn’t have more than one use or one season, then keep hunting down other options.

4. Display children’s artwork, or make your own.

If you have children, it’s hard not to love the festive drawings and paintings they bring home each year around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Instead of stashing these away, display them in your apartment using decorative washi tape to secure them to the wall. They will appreciate your use of them, and it is fun to see how their artistic abilities change over the years. Don’t have kids? PBS has a lot of simple ideas that can be fun to do yourself.

5. Transform Thanksgiving into Christmas

Transforming holiday decorations save you time and money. Christmas garland pairs nicely with harvest décor for Thanksgiving. Find a neutral (but festive) tablecloth and matching candles. A light beige may match your orange Thanksgiving decor, but also match your white Christmas theme. Make your wreaths easy to transform. A green wreath decorated with small plastic pumpkins can easily be changed by removing the pumpkins and adding Christmas bulbs.

6. Show off your Christmas cards

Grab a piece of cardboard, wrapping paper, ribbon, and clothespins for an easy way to display your Christmas cards. Wrap the cardboard tightly with wrapping paper, then add the ribbon by wrapping around to the back and fastening with tape. Attach Christmas cards each time you receive them to the ribbon with a clothespin. You can typically find these supplies around your apartment and it’s cheap enough to discard so you won’t waste space when packing up.

7. Think small when it comes to the tree

Miniature artificial trees are a good option for small spaces. They have pre-lit versions and miniature ornaments available for decoration. To get a real feel, you can gather pine branches and place into decorative vases filled with water.

Half trees are even an option for someone who only has a tight corner to fit their festive tree.

8. Use Christmas bulbs all year

Don’t pack up your holiday decorations after the first of the year, they can still serve a purpose in your apartment. Place them in glass vases or bowls to create a unique look. Pair them with artificial flowers or leave them by themselves. When you’re shopping for holiday decorations, keep in mind colors that fit into your apartment’s year-round color scheme.

9. Hang your stockings without a fireplace

If your apartment doesn’t have a fireplace, use adhesive hooks to hang stockings. Take it a step further and weave lights or garland through the hooks before each stocking is hung. You don’t need a big mantle to have a fun display. If your kids ask how Santa makes it inside, then just tell them he doesn’t need a chimney to deliver their presents because he is magic.

10. Choose sturdy decorations and protect your breakables

Be practical when it comes to storage after the holidays are over. Breakables can be a hassle to wrap when placing into storage containers. Try finding wooden or plastic figures that can be easily packed when they’re not in use.

You probably won’t live in your apartment forever, so keep movability in mind If you buying new decor. If you do have breakables, reuse your wrapping paper after opening gifts to keep them safe, and always save the packing materials to use year after year.

11. Utilize unused spaces for storage

With small living spaces, it can be difficult to find spots to hide bulky tubs. Try finding shallow but wide containers that easily slide in unused spaces like under couches and beds.  Put shelving units in an outdoor closet or even a coat closet to better utilize vertical space. If you have to, rent a small storage unit or ask a family member to borrow some attic space.

7 Sneaky Recommendations to Lower Your Apartment Heating Bills

7 Sneaky Recommendations to Lower Your Apartment Heating Bills

Winter is coming.
Is your apartment prepared for the chilling temperatures ahead?
You’ve probably heard some common ways to conserve your energy bills — window film, caulking, etc. But, these solutions mainly pertain to homeowners. No fair, right?
We have some good news, though. Even if you’re just renting, there are still plenty of ways you can keep your place toasty (without costing an arm and a leg). Keep reading to learn our seven sneaky ways to lower your apartment heating bills this season!
 1. Reverse, reverse.
You may think of your ceiling fan as a way to cool down, but did you know it can actually keep heat from escaping your apartment? Simply flip the rotation switch (which makes the blades travel counter wise), set to a low speed and enjoy the savings.
 2. Blinded by the light.
During winter, take advantage of the daylight sun by keeping the curtains drawn. As soon as it starts getting dark, draw your blinds and curtains shut. An extra tip: opt for thicker material or black-out curtains during the colder seasons. They’ll help prevent drafts from escaping through your windows.
 3. Shut the front door.
We mentioned drafts traveling through your windows, but did you know they can do so through your door as well? Stop by your local store and pick up a draft stopper. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, take to Pinterest and create your own!
 4. Layer by layer.
You can never stock up enough on blankets and fuzzy socks! Lowering your thermostat a degree or two won’t make a huge temperature difference but will save tons of energy over the course of the season.
 5. Light it up.
Did you know lighting is one of the easiest solutions to save? When you opt for ENERGY STAR bulbs, you’ll not only enjoy better output — but 75% less energy as well. Another perk of those lights is they last six to 10 times longer than your average incandescent bulbs.
 6. Power down.
Electronics and appliances account for 15% of a home’s electrical use. Surprisingly enough, these devices are drawing in energy, even when switched off. Unplug any chargers or power adapters when they’re not in use. Another option is using a power strip as a central “power” off point.
 7. Keep it circulating.
Close off areas of your home that don’t receive much traffic — think laundry rooms, closets and bathrooms. By simply closing the doors of your apartment, you’ll increase the circulation of warm air. Another thing to do is ensure all vents are open and clear of obstructions (especially those floor vents with sofas).
We hope you enjoyed these sneaky ways to save on your apartment energy bills this winter. What tips and tricks have you accumulated over the years? We’d love to hear your thoughts and stories in the comments below!

    Your Guide to Off-Campus Living

      Your Guide to Off-Campus Living

After a year or two in the dorms, you’re ready to make it on your own! Or, maybe you’re graduating and they just won’t let you crash on campus anymore. Summer is the perfect time to move into that new apartment and since we’re nearing the end of the semester, it’s time to start looking. But, off-campus living is drastically different than on campus. There are a few things you can (and should) do to prepare for this change.
Consider that you now have a landlord or lessee.
      • Make a good impression! The more respect you show to them and their property, the more they will respect and trust you in return.
      • Come prepared with questions. During your first visit, nerves may flutter and you forget all of those important details you wanted to ask about.
      • Write everything down. Any agreements made aloud should be put into a contract, for your sake and the lessee’s. Don’t just take someone’s word, get it in writing.
      • Take inventory of the house or apartment. Some apartment complexes will do this anyway. But before you move anything in, go through the living space and write down every detail about the way it comes. Then give a copy to your landlord and keep one for yourself.
Remember you will be cooking for yourself now.
      • Learn some simple recipes. No need to become a professional chef, just learn to make a few good meals so you have more options than fast food.
      • Look into meal prepping. If you’re very busy most of the time, this could be a great option to eat somewhat healthy. Prepping helps makes mealtime quick and easy.
      • If you have a roommate, address sharing food. Roommates can be wonderful or awful and food is a huge deciding factor for that outcome.
      • Don’t get bugs! Leaving food out, forgetting to clear old food or forgetting the dishes too long can cause bugs easier than you would imagine. And if you get bugs, you (or part of your security deposit) may have to pay for an exterminator.
Paperwork and other requirements to rent.
      • Security deposit. When first signing a lease, a security deposit will most likely be requested. This is for the renter to pull from if damages occur within the time of rental and if damages are found/created when you move out.
      • Credit. Most renters will want proof of your credit to ensure you can afford the rent. Know your credit score and information. But, if you don’t have any credit (since not a lot of college students and young graduates do), please refer to the next point.
      • Cosigner. A cosigner can typically be used if you don’t have any credit for proof that someone will be able to pay rent. If someone else will be helping you pay rent, they should be the cosigner.
      • Application to rent. Some renters will require an application to rent and will consider this first when deciding to rent to you. If possible, on the first visit, come prepared with the application to rent ready to hand over if you liked the tour.
There is a different payment structure.
      • First month’s rent. This will usually be due soon after you sign a contract or upon move in. Prepare yourself to make this payment upfront.
      • Security deposit. As mentioned previously, a security deposit will typically be paid upfront as money for potential damages. This can be a pretty hefty amount, so be ready. But, whatever does not get used on damages during your stay there should get returned to you.
      • Utility bills. These have most likely been lumped into one full payment for on-campus living, but off-campus will typically be paid monthly per use. This means they can be more expensive during certain seasons or depending on your level of use.
      • Other bills. Just like the utility bills, some other amenities have been lumped into on campus housing payments like cable, wifi, etc. These will become extra payments to make and you should prepare to make these payments each month.

Student Warning: You’re Losing Money by Not Using Two-Bedroom Apartments

For a college student, moving out of their parents’ home and into their own space is both invigorating and nerve-racking, but living with a roommate can put both the student and the parents at ease.

Costs can climb quickly too — and how do you know you’re joining a quality community? Enter the student’s best friend for new housing: the two-bedroom apartment.

A 2015 study revealed that sharing rent with a roommate near Oklahoma City saves each person an average of $249 every month. Over the course of a year, average savings will balloon to a total of $2,988.
That’s a huge win for your wallet! Still, how do you hunt down the right place to call home?
Finding the perfect two-bedroom apartment can be difficult in a college town because each resident wants to have enough space to call their own but may not be willing to sacrifice their monthly budget for this. Savannah Square and Alameda Pointe are great options for students that are looking for a spacious home for an affordable price.

Alameda Pointe residents have access to a saltwater pool and have the luxury of walk-in closets, plus it is only seven minutes away from the University of Oklahoma Norman campus.

Savannah Square residents can enjoy basketball courts, a fitness center, tennis courts, saltwater pools and easy access to public transportation, and they are only about 10 minutes away from the University of Oklahoma Norman campus.

Parents can rest assured that their student is safe because each apartment community includes an alarm system.

Moving to college for the first time should be filled with adventure and excitement and Northstar Properties wants to alleviate the housing stress so that students can enjoy their collegiate experience.
