Don’t Make These 10 Self Storage Mistakes

Storage units are an easy and affordable way to clear the clutter but keep the belongings you care about or might want in the future. Storage units are great for events like moving into or out of a Norman apartment or finding a place to store your clunky Christmas decorations.

However, there are some expensive mistakes renters might make when they are choosing a unit to store their possessions.
Mistake #1: Selecting the Wrong Storage Unit Size
The biggest difference in price between one unit and another is most often the size, which might motivate some people to choose a smaller unit than what they really need in an effort to save a few dollars every month. However, if you have to stack your unit from floor to ceiling with boxes, then access to your belongings will be harder.

Got kids? 7 Creative Ways to Store Toys in Edmond Apartments

Keeping children's toys picked up and organized seems like an uphill battle. Apartment space can be limited and with the risk of damaging walls, options are few. With the right tips, tools, and tricks, you can make clean up time simple and tidy.

1. Start with Organizing and Decluttering

The first step in creating a nice space for your children to play is to get rid of toys they aren't interested in anymore and organizing the ones they play with the most. Not only does this make it easier for your kids to find the toys they want to play with, but it makes clean up easier too.
In order to maintain organization and limit clutter, give your kids a clean up box. When they are picking up toys and don't know where one is supposed to go, tell them to put them in the box so you can show them where it goes when they’re finished. This idea also helps if the kids are in a hurry to clean up. All the toys left out can go in the crate for them to put away at a later time.

Pro tip: You can also store some toys in a tote elsewhere, and change them out periodically making them feel like their toys are always “new.”

Pros and Cons to Large Floor Plan Apartments

Pros and Cons of Large Floor Plans

Pros and Cons to Large Floor Plan Apartments

Finding a new place can be daunting.  There can be multiple floors, open formats, small spaces and large floor plans.  It can be a whirlwind to find what’s right for you. Bigger is always better though right? Not necessarily. There are pros and cons to renting a large floor plan apartment.

Pro: Large floor plans can have wide open spaces

Do you want wide open spaces?  A large floor plan may be for you.  The best part is you can show off your whole home fairly easily and wow friends and family with how much space you have.

The space doesn’t limit your ability to throw a big party or offer a room to a few guests who want to stay over for the night.  A large floor plan apartment will let you entertain guests without the hindrance of feeling like canned sardines in multiple smaller rooms.

You have opened up your place to welcome your guests, and being able to freely move about allows for a more social environment.  Even if you aren’t throwing a party, a large floor plan will make events feel welcoming. The possibilities are as big as your apartment.

Pro: Large spaces support large families

If you have a large family already or your family is just getting started, a large floor plan provides space needed.  Plus, you can hide messes a little easier with a little more space.  Cleaning can wait, you have other things on your plate.

Of course, you love everyone in your home, but sometimes, you just need a little peace and quiet. Extra square footage allows you to put some more space between you and everyone else when you need time to focus. Your kids might even get to enjoy their own bedroom rather than having to share with a sibling.

More people means more things. Larger floor plans will most likely have more storage to keep clutter under control.

Pro: Larger floor plans might have an office space.

This is especially beneficial to remote workers who could use an office space to segregate their work day from leisure time. The office could be a place for paying the bills, working on a side hustle, doing your favorite hobby or playing computer games.

A dedicated home office space is also beneficial for contract workers because it is an expense you can deduct from your taxes each year.

Pro: You can enjoy all the natural light.

Large spaces can support large windows, and it’s nice to have all the fresh air blowing between rooms. Opening up your space and letting the light iN is the next best thing to being outdoors.  Large spaces not only have the ability to let in more light, but they also feel big and luxurious with open windows. Small apartments need open windows to compensate for the limited space. Your large apartment is clearly not lacking in spaces, so the windows are just an added benefit.

Pro: More space for your style

Enjoy showing off your favorite artwork and all of your family photos with a large apartment. You are not limited by space when it comes to making yourself at home. You have enough room for shelves without feeling crowded and cluttered.

In a small space, you have to be very choosy about what makes it through the door or your apartment will be cramped quickly. You don’t have that problem in your large apartment.

There are plenty of good reasons to choose a large floor plan, but the decision comes with a few setbacks.

Con: Large spaces could mean larger utility bills.

Brace for the utility bills.  It takes a lot of energy to heat and cool a large place.  You may need to get creative during expensive seasons like the warmest summer months and the coldest days of winter.  Your family will want to remain comfortable despite the extra heat or chill in the air.

Shutting off the least used rooms and concentrating heat or air conditioning will combat high electric bills. Changing the light bulbs to LEDs will save money. Install ceiling fans for the summer, and ask everyone in the household to be cognizant of their electric consumption.

Con: It’s easier to accumulate too many “things”
Many families are choosing to downsize or live with less, but it’s hard when you have a larger floor plan. It’s simple to absent-mindedly keep things because you can put it in the back of a closet or on a top shelf somewhere. You also don’t want your home to feel empty, so by default, you will have more things than someone who lives in a smaller space.

If you ever decide to downsize in the future, you’ll have more things to sort through. “Things” are not bad, but you now have more things to figure out what to do with.

Con: It’s empty space if you can’t afford to decorate

A larger space means more room for furniture and artwork to fill the space.  If you don’t already have that and can’t afford to purchase them it makes the space feel empty and not homey.

Con: Cleaning takes a lot of work

Sure, a big place means you don’t need to constantly clean to keep the space from feeling cluttered, but it also means if you wait too long to clean, then all the chores can be overwhelming. You might need extra help to get the job done or ask the whole family to pitch in on Saturday mornings to keep the large apartment in tip-top shape.

If you live in an apartment with roommates, you might have to agree to different chores and deadlines to stay on top of keeping your large living space nice and clean.

Ready for your new place?

Understanding the pros and cons to large floor plan apartments can help you get ready for your next move.  There are some definite benefits to having a little more room, but you need to be ready to know what that responsibility requires.  If you think you are ready to choose your next apartment, then browse our floor plans in Norman, Tulsa, Oklahoma City or Edmond.

    Your Guide to Off-Campus Living

      Your Guide to Off-Campus Living

After a year or two in the dorms, you’re ready to make it on your own! Or, maybe you’re graduating and they just won’t let you crash on campus anymore. Summer is the perfect time to move into that new apartment and since we’re nearing the end of the semester, it’s time to start looking. But, off-campus living is drastically different than on campus. There are a few things you can (and should) do to prepare for this change.
Consider that you now have a landlord or lessee.
      • Make a good impression! The more respect you show to them and their property, the more they will respect and trust you in return.
      • Come prepared with questions. During your first visit, nerves may flutter and you forget all of those important details you wanted to ask about.
      • Write everything down. Any agreements made aloud should be put into a contract, for your sake and the lessee’s. Don’t just take someone’s word, get it in writing.
      • Take inventory of the house or apartment. Some apartment complexes will do this anyway. But before you move anything in, go through the living space and write down every detail about the way it comes. Then give a copy to your landlord and keep one for yourself.
Remember you will be cooking for yourself now.
      • Learn some simple recipes. No need to become a professional chef, just learn to make a few good meals so you have more options than fast food.
      • Look into meal prepping. If you’re very busy most of the time, this could be a great option to eat somewhat healthy. Prepping helps makes mealtime quick and easy.
      • If you have a roommate, address sharing food. Roommates can be wonderful or awful and food is a huge deciding factor for that outcome.
      • Don’t get bugs! Leaving food out, forgetting to clear old food or forgetting the dishes too long can cause bugs easier than you would imagine. And if you get bugs, you (or part of your security deposit) may have to pay for an exterminator.
Paperwork and other requirements to rent.
      • Security deposit. When first signing a lease, a security deposit will most likely be requested. This is for the renter to pull from if damages occur within the time of rental and if damages are found/created when you move out.
      • Credit. Most renters will want proof of your credit to ensure you can afford the rent. Know your credit score and information. But, if you don’t have any credit (since not a lot of college students and young graduates do), please refer to the next point.
      • Cosigner. A cosigner can typically be used if you don’t have any credit for proof that someone will be able to pay rent. If someone else will be helping you pay rent, they should be the cosigner.
      • Application to rent. Some renters will require an application to rent and will consider this first when deciding to rent to you. If possible, on the first visit, come prepared with the application to rent ready to hand over if you liked the tour.
There is a different payment structure.
      • First month’s rent. This will usually be due soon after you sign a contract or upon move in. Prepare yourself to make this payment upfront.
      • Security deposit. As mentioned previously, a security deposit will typically be paid upfront as money for potential damages. This can be a pretty hefty amount, so be ready. But, whatever does not get used on damages during your stay there should get returned to you.
      • Utility bills. These have most likely been lumped into one full payment for on-campus living, but off-campus will typically be paid monthly per use. This means they can be more expensive during certain seasons or depending on your level of use.
      • Other bills. Just like the utility bills, some other amenities have been lumped into on campus housing payments like cable, wifi, etc. These will become extra payments to make and you should prepare to make these payments each month.
If you’re renting for the first time, what are you most excited for? What are you afraid of? Share your thoughts in the comments below. And, if you have any questions about our properties or the rental process itself, give our Northstar Properties team a call at 405-310-6450.

8 Topics to Consider Before Choosing a Roommate

8 Topics to Consider Before Choosing a Roommate

Choosing a roommate is never an easy task. Since they’ll be sharing a part of your life with you, it’s important to ensure your living styles complement each other. Here’s a list of the 8 most important topics to discuss when searching for a roommate.

Cleaning When discussing cleanliness with potential roommates, it’s important to be honest. If you only wash dishes once the sink is full, let them know. If you Lysol the countertops three times a day, let them know. Neither habit is better or worse, there just needs to be a discussion on how to balance these habits before moving in. If there are major differences, it’s okay to move on and look for a roommate that cleans similar to you.

Sleep People use their home for sleeping more than anything else. If your sleeping schedule is opposite that of your roommate, you may run into trouble. If a roommate can’t sleep through the smallest noise, that may limit what the other roommate can do in their own home. Make it a point to discuss common sleeping habits — like needing a window open or sound machine to fall asleep. Though these may seem like small considerations, but it’s best to talk things out now.

Guests and Significant Others Sharing a home with another person also means sharing your home with their guests. Maybe both of you are party animals or maybe one of you considers “ a few friends over for tea” a party? To figure out those similarities and differences, take initiative and ask. Additionally, consider guests who may be visiting more frequently, like a significant other, and how you feel about that. Make your preferences known and be aware of theirs before signing the lease.

Environmental Impacts How someone feels about the environment doesn’t seem like a big deal, but these opinions can affect a roommate dynamic. Ask your potential roommate about their environmental consciousness because it can affect how you both handle tasks like taking out the trash, running the AC, or even cooking. Though it may seem like a personal opinion, asking about their preferences is the only way to ensure they align with yours.

Past Roommates If your potential roommate had issues in the past, you may find this information beneficial. Some problems may have been caused by the other person, but they’re probably not blame-free in every issue with past roommates. Find out what aspects makes them difficult to live with. If those quirks are balanced or matched by yours, you may have a good fit. If not, don’t be afraid to part ways — keeping things civil.

Schedules Daily schedules can make or break a happy living situation. If roommate schedules are too similar, there may not be enough alone time. On the other end of the spectrum, schedules that differ too much may cause distance and negative feelings. Schedules may affect other things such as guests visiting, cleaning, and sleeping habits. Before taking the plunge in living together, discuss how much time you’ll be spending at home, work, out of the house, and check if your schedules correlate well.

Pets Pets are another roommate you have to care for entirely. Most leases outline pet restrictions, but it’s important to establish your own. If your potential roommate can’t say no to that cute furball on the roadside, but you don’t want to pay the pet deposit, you shouldn’t be roommates. Allergies and guests with pets should be also be addressed in the conversation.

Habits/Hobbies This is a broad topic to discuss with a potential roommate because you don’t know what hobbies they may have. And maybe, their hobby is a deal breaker you hadn’t considered. Talk with them about your quirks or odd interests, asking (without judgment) about theirs. This topic can address core values that may differ between you two, which could be valuable to know before moving in with someone.

Finding the perfect roommate is a difficult but not an impossible process. For more information on our multiple or single bedroom properties, please contact our team at 405-310-6450.

4 Ways to Maximize Space in Your Apartment

4 Ways to Maximize Space in Your Apartment

Whether you rent a home or large floor plan apartment, clutter certainly works in mysterious ways. Junk mail, shoes, receipts and everyday items quickly begin establishing a home of their own — leaving you with less space and more frustrations.

Though a lack of storage can be your worst enemy, it also forces you to get a little creative. We’ve come up with four ways to maximize space in your apartment so you can spend less time hiding clutter and more time doing the things you love!

      Create Hidden Storage

Lacking storage closets? Don’t fret, there are plenty of ways to incorporate hidden storage. Choose a bed with high legs or cabinets underneath for shoes and heavier items. If you’re looking to maximize space in the kitchen, evaluate what appliances you use most often and placed unused items on top shelves or above the cabinets themselves.

If your bookshelves are holding an eclectic collection of random objects, take advantage of decorative bins and crates. They’re perfect for stashing away media cords, remotes and more.

      Stay Organized

If you’re keeping your personal items in hidden storage areas, make an inventory while putting things away and document it with an organizational map. That way, when you need to find your wrapping paper to prepare a gift, you can consult the map and quickly remember where you stored it months before.
If you’re hiding away documents or collections of anything in particular, make sure to develop a proper inventory system so you’ll be able to locate them later.

      Use Multipurpose Furniture

Need some extra seating? Look for ottomans that also serve as storage solutions. Need some table space in the living room? Consider nesting tables that can easily be maneuvered. If you have an extra bedroom serving as an office, find a sofa that serves as a pull-out bed when you have guests staying over.
Incorporating pieces that serve more than one purpose instantly tuck away clutter while providing you with much-needed space.

      Think Vertical

If you’re bumping bows, it’s time to start looking up. Floating shelves are an amazing investment for studios and large floor plans alike, and allow you to maximize closet and cabinet space. Not ready to drill into the walls? There are plenty of standing shelving units and bookshelves to choose from as well.

What other tips do you have to maximize space in your apartment? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below and give Northstar Properties a call if you’re interested in touring any of our apartments!

What Do You Look for When Apartment Shopping?

What Do You Look for When Apartment Shopping?

Apartment hunting can be tough – deciding what type of amenities you want to access, determining the ideal location of your complex in relation to the rest of your everyday obligations, and choosing whether to sign with an all-bills-paid lease or to choose to pay your own monthly bills.

There is a mile long list of things to consider when searching for your new home. The NorthStar OKC team has broken down some of the factors we think are important in determining where you should live.

      1. Amenities

The amenities that are included in your monthly fee are important when you are comparing different complexes and leases. Is it important for you to have laundry facilities in your unit, or is a community laundry complex all that you need? Would you and your kids like to have access to a swimming pool, tennis court, or volleyball court? Do you have a pet and are looking for a pet-friendly facility?

Each of the NorthStar OKC properties offers different amenities including a clubhouse, saltwater pools, tennis and volleyball courts, balconies and pet-friendly units.

      2. Bill-Pay

The idea of “all bills paid” lease and not having to worry about varying monthly utility expenses might sound grand, but does the benefit of not worrying outweigh the potential limitations that come with having complete control over your utilities?

Here at NorthStar OKC, we allow you to take the reigns on your utilities. We do not choose the temperature of your unit nor do we decide when the heater is turned on for the winter – all of those decisions are up to you.

      3. Location

The location of a complex is a huge factor in deciding whether it’d be a place you’d be willing to live and commute from. Will you have a long commute during OKC rush hour traffic or will you find a home just a few minutes from your office? Our OKC complexes provide easy access to the city and are centrally located throughout the metroplex.

      Conclusion

Whether you are looking for luxurious or recreational amenities, utility control or easy access to the city, NorthStar Properties is the place for you!

Student Warning: You’re Losing Money by Not Using Two-Bedroom Apartments

For a college student, moving out of their parents’ home and into their own space is both invigorating and nerve-racking, but living with a roommate can put both the student and the parents at ease.

Costs can climb quickly too — and how do you know you’re joining a quality community? Enter the student’s best friend for new housing: the two-bedroom apartment.

A 2015 study revealed that sharing rent with a roommate near Oklahoma City saves each person an average of $249 every month. Over the course of a year, average savings will balloon to a total of $2,988.
That’s a huge win for your wallet! Still, how do you hunt down the right place to call home?
Finding the perfect two-bedroom apartment can be difficult in a college town because each resident wants to have enough space to call their own but may not be willing to sacrifice their monthly budget for this. Savannah Square and Alameda Pointe are great options for students that are looking for a spacious home for an affordable price.

Alameda Pointe residents have access to a saltwater pool and have the luxury of walk-in closets, plus it is only seven minutes away from the University of Oklahoma Norman campus.

Savannah Square residents can enjoy basketball courts, a fitness center, tennis courts, saltwater pools and easy access to public transportation, and they are only about 10 minutes away from the University of Oklahoma Norman campus.

Parents can rest assured that their student is safe because each apartment community includes an alarm system.

Moving to college for the first time should be filled with adventure and excitement and Northstar Properties wants to alleviate the housing stress so that students can enjoy their collegiate experience.
